Pre-Summer Activities in the North Shore

We might still have about two more weeks until summer officially begins, but festival season is here. The Shipyards Night Market has been in full on Fridays for the past month, as have the local Farmers’ Markets. This weekend marks the beginning of the season; Waterfront Park will host Philippines Days this weekend. Father’s Day Sunday is now traditionally devoted to the Italian-French Car show, also at Waterfront Park. West Vancouver will host the Dundarave Porsche Show that same Sunday.

As temperatures start warming up, it is a great moment to consider activities for the kids during the next couple of months. There is a wide variety of day camps for children during summer break such as the Grouse Mountain’s Adventure Day Camps (ages 5 to 16), as well as the many options offered by the North Vancouver Recreation and Culture Commission and West Vancouver Community Centres.  Local art teacher Jeri Engen offers summer art camps at her studio in Lynn Valley for children 6 and up. For those who love to create, dance, sing and perform, Monarch Arts Education offers a day camp for children 5 to 12 years old. The program is held at Presentation House Theatre in Lower Lonsdale.

One of the most exciting events during the summer is Fun City Festival (August 12 and 13) with its main attraction Slide the City, a 1,000 ft water slide, which turns Lower Lonsdale into a pedestrian and slider zone filled with vendors, food trucks, live music, DJs and entertainment. We might still be two months away but it’s time to buy tickets.

North Shore residents can also play tourist and visit the area’s tourist attractions, will taking advantage of the resident discount. Capilano Suspension Bridge offers an annual pass for the price of a day visit for BC residents. Grouse Mountain also has annual local passes.
